The Clifton

Clifton Village

? covers

This research pass surfaced a second significant, unambiguous finding: The Clifton closed permanently on 2 August 2025, confirmed independently by trade press (The Morning Advertiser) and hospitality media (The Staff Canteen), both dated within days of each other and both naming the same operators, reasons and building owner. Operators Sarah and Tom Watts-Jones -- who also run the acclaimed Heathcock gastropub in Cardiff and the Michelin-rated Hare & Hounds near Cowbridge -- announced the closure via social media; building owner Mitchells & Butlers said they were unaware until seeing the announcement themselves and had received no prior contact from the tenants. The stated reasons were a steep drop in Clifton Village's summer footfall combined with the venue having no outdoor seating at all, which the operators said good autumn and winter trade could not offset. No successor tenant had been announced as of the closure coverage. The Heathcock and Hare & Hounds are explicitly unaffected and remain open.

Before this closure, The Clifton would have been a genuinely interesting candidate: it opened in July 2023 (in a former Côte Brasserie unit, after a major redesign), entered the Michelin Guide within five to seven months of opening, and ranked 70th on the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list -- fast, real critical recognition for a young venue. The food was built around a custom Parrilla grill, live-fire cooking, and genuinely made-from-scratch basics: own sourdough, cultured butter, fresh pasta, with a strong focus on sharing and feasting dishes, exactly the kind of long-table format this series wants.

Given the confirmed closure, this venue cannot be recommended for outreach -- there is no restaurant left to approach. This row is kept in `restaurant_profiles`, as with Shop 3 Bistro above, to document honestly why a promising name from the original research is no longer a live option, rather than silently dropping it or leaving a stale "TripAdvisor 3.9" pill standing in for the real, more serious update this venue needs.
